DIMENSION 4600 UPGRADE VIDEO CARD?

Dimension 4600 with agp x8 geforce fx 5200

2G memory

160 G HDD

Want to upgrade video card. Any suggestions besides telling me to get new computer!|||hi there

your actual pc isnt that bad.. with 2gb of ram and a 160gb hard drive... however your power supply is your problem since 250w isnt powerful enough for most decent graphic cards however for around £90 i can recommend you a good agp x8 video card with a power supply that will be enough to power the card

the card im recommending is the HIS IceQ H467QS1GHA Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 AGP 4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as… ) .. and this is one of the best agp cards you can still buy... it has a 750mhz core clock and 1gb of gddr3 memory running at 1600mhz ddr effective.... theres also a 128bit memory interface and 320 stream processors

in regards to performance this will run most of the latest games however at medium detail and resolution... and compared to your geforce fx5200 its around 4 times as fast

if you want something a little cheaper then check out the "GIGABYTE GV-R465D2-1GI Radeon HD 4650 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 8X HDCP Ready Video Card"( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as… ) ... not as powerful as the HD4670 but alot better than your fx5200

as i mentioned you will also need a better power supply.... however for just $39 you can get the reliable "RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-530SS 530W ATX12V V2.2/ EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Modular LED Power Supply"( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as… ) ... this is powerful enough for both the cards i have recommended and has dual +12v rails with 37A total ... more than enough for most video cards

the problem is there are less and less agp cards around these days as manufactuers prefer to make pci-express cards and nvidia agp cards are near enough non existent !

anyway i hope this helps, any questions let me know

good luck !|||Do you know what you want? If you do, will it work in your computer? One area to check if your computer is a Big Box Store product is the memory and the power supply. They put minimal power for what you get right out of the box. I went from 512MB to 1GB RAM one time and my power supple wouldn't allow me to boot! It was an HP machine with limited room for a new PSU but I got one taking my power from 200W to 340W. The 340W is still too small for today's computers. I'm dead in the water toward adding anything else to that particular computer. It is going to my wife.

It is going to be hard to find a new AGP card. It's a dead format. If you wait a few years they'll be cheap, but right now they are premium priced. If you opt to spend the money, get the memory and the power supply also. You might want to get the memory and try it for a few weeks. That may help your performance enough that you don't have to go any further. If not, you aren't out anything but a little bit of time.

Good luck, neospar
