Can you upgrade video card in HP Pavilion Elite m9040n Desktop PC ?

I have HP Pavilion Elite m9040n Desktop PC with 3gb DDR 2 ram,Quad 6600 processor and 8400GS card. Can I put there better card to play high-eng games? please details(as not a lot of space inside)|||I did this with an older HP system. You can upgrade but if you do, your system restore discs/partition may have problems restoring your system *unless* you take out your new card and temporarily replace the older one as your video drivers will now be different from your factory settings.

The first time I had to do a reformat I had trouble viewing the Windows install prompts as my video was warped using the old drivers with the new card.|||You can . Buy a video card and change it

Sorry idon`t know in details|||You should be able to upgrade that card. You may have to get a low-profile video board for an upgrade to fit, however. Also, if you get a high-end video card (ATI x2900 or a nVidia 8800), make sure that you have at least a 400 watt power supply and adequate cooling in the computer, otherwise you'll probably fry the power supply and the added heat damages components.|||Sure you can. This case takes standard full height PCI express x16 video cards. A Quad Core with 3 GB RAM and then they put that lame 8400GS video card.

The 8400GS require very little cooling so it is almost quiet. A high performance card requires a lot of cooling so the sound from the card fan will be noticeable.

Your system has only a 300 watt power supply so for any gaming video card you install you will have to also upgrade to a more powerful power supply.

Basically you will probably change the power supply first, then test that the computer still works. Then uninstall your video card drivers, uninstall the 8400GS card and install the new card in its place. Many of these cards will also require an addition power supply connection to the video card as they exceed the current draw that the PCI express slot they plug into was designed to supply. Then you start the computer and install the video card drivers.

I think the NVidia 8800GTS would be a great match to your quad core system for playing high end games.

===============================

My opinion for a new video card:

For playing the latest games a FRAPS (frames per second) of 50 or higher; ideal would be over 80

For moderate games a FRAPS of 30 or more.

For simple games or no games a FRAPS of 18 or more

For FRAPS rating of video cards refer to:

Higher performance cards require more current from the 12 volt leg of the power supply that supplies the video card. This may require changing to a more powerful power supply. Determine the amps at 12 Volts the video card recommends and compare it to your existing power supply.

The easy war to figure out what power supply you need is to go to ATI or NVidia and choose one from their list of certified power supplies one that is certified to work with your card or the most powerful card you might ever use.

SLI certified means it is certified to power two of the cards in and SLI configuration.

Crossfire certified means it is certified to power two of the cards in and Crossfire configuration.
